Facts on tree nurseries in Tigray (1995-1996)

There are 205 state tree nurseries and about 400 community tree nurseries in Tigray.

The total production of Tigray state tree nurseries in 1996 was 61 million seedlings. 31 million were sold, 21 million delivered freely for communal afforestations and 8 million were left in the nurseries.

TTNRP assisted 46 state tree nurseries in 1995-96. Out of those, 39 tree nurseries made 17% of the total production in Tigray and generated 60% of the total incomes (1996).

In 1995, 38% of the total production in TTNRP-assisted nurseries were sold to farmers and urban dwellers. In 1996, 52% of the total production in TTNRP-assisted nurseries was sold.

Incomes from TTNRP nurseries amounted 180.000 Birr in 1995 and 215.000 Birr in 1996. These incomes cover the expenses needed for the purchase of polyethylene tubes. The total incomes from all tree nurseries in Tigray amount to 230.000 Birr for 1997.

In 1995, TTNRP-assisted tree nurseries employed 1400 workers and used 1000 tons of cereal and 42.000 litres of edible oil.

Manpower in tree nurseries counts for 40% of the variable costs.

Only 6% of the incomes in TTNRP-assisted nurseries come from the sale of by-products (1995).

In 1995, one forth of the TTNRP-assisted nurseries covered 40% of the running costs.
In 1996, one third of the TTNRP-assisted nurseries covered 40% of the running costs.

Due to the unsecured land tenure and the raise of the price of seedlings, the amount of seedlings used for private purposes in Tigray dropped by 16 % between 1995 and 1996.

Villagers in Arra-Assegede collect stones to build a checkdam in a gully. Erosion gullies stretch on 58 km in the catchment area and are a serious threat to agricultural production and food security.
